I lurve awards season. Starlets gussied up in dresses and jewels worth thousands of dollars on several occasions? For a judgey fashion blogger like myself, it’s the closest thing to heaven on earth.
I didn’t write a post about this year’s Golden Globes (I was under the weather. Boo.), so I was über excited for last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. As I took in E’s red carpet coverage on mute, I couldn’t help but notice that midnight blue and black-and-white gowns were very popular with the ladies.
The proof: Nicole Kidman in Vivienne Westwood, Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen, and Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior.
See also: Julianne Moore in Chanel Haute Couture, Julianna Margulies in Chado Ralph Rucci, January Jones in Prabal Gurung, and Claire Danes in Givenchy.
If I had to identify a common thread between my favorites last night, I’d say it’s simplicity. None of these beauties reinvented the wheel or anything, but they all looked lovely. And recognizable. And in Hollywood, that’s sayin’ somethin’.
OK, my Best Dressed picks (in no particular order):

Amy Poehler in Zuhair Murad
Look out, sexy momma comin’ through! Makeup and hair are soft and pretty, and that dress is doing you major favors, girl. Not crazy about the purse, but it’s not detracting from the overall look so I’ll let it slide. A personal best, in my opinion.

Elizabeth Moss in Dolce & Gabbana
Oh, Lizzy. I saw you and I squealed. Your hair and makeup are perfect. (Sometimes you look a little washed out on the carpet, dear.) And kudos for going short. Show off those gams!

Kiernan Shipka in Oscar de la Renta.
Kiernan, you little doll you. Hollywood tarts, take note: THIS is how it’s done. She looks pretty, fashionable, and age-appropriate. Someone was raised right.

Excess is not really something I consider a bad thing, especially when you are talking about living.

It’s photos like this that make it hard for me to follow OscarPRGirl on Tumblr. I am green with envy!
Erika Bearman, aka OscarPRGirl, has one of the best jobs ever. As Oscar de la Renta’s director of communications, tweeting about the brand and posting photos of herself in its fabulous gowns (see above) are among her job duties.
Should Bearman ever wish to leave her post, I will happily take her place. You listening, Mr. de la Renta?

No one does pretty like Oscar de la Renta. No one.
It was too hard for me to pick favorites, so I’ve posted video of his entire Spring 2012 runway show instead. I think this is some of ODLR’s best work yet.
Enjoy!

This is the ad for Oscar de la Renta’s new fragrance, Live in Love. It was created by fashion illustrator David Downton.
Don’t get me wrong. Digital photography is amazing, but beautiful images like this make me long for the days “when advertising came out of an artist’s pen and brush,” as Women’s Wear Daily so aptly put it.
Interestingly, one of the inspirations for Live in Love is this tattoo on Raffaele, the head of de la Renta’s sample room.
