Yesterday, my family and I went to the Jackson Township Safety Center in Massillon, Ohio to visit the Field of Heroes, where more than 900 American flags are flying atop 8-foot tall staffs to honor those who have served, or are serving, in our armed forces.
We made the trip especially to see the flag my mom purchased in her father’s name. A sergeant in the Army, he fought in the South Pacific during World War II.
Standing among all those flags at sunset as a young man played “Taps” was incredibly moving. (I took this photo just before sunset.)
On this Memorial Day, please take a moment to reflect on the many men and women who have given their lives in service to their country.

“This weekend, folks across the country are opening up the pool, firing up the grill, and taking a well-earned moment to relax. But Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. In town squares and national cemeteries, public services and moments of quiet reflection, we will honor those who love their country enough to sacrifice their own lives for it.” ~President Barack Obama

Any “Scandal” fans out there? I am hooked. Juicy storylines!

The show’s main character, Olivia Pope, is a D.C. fixer and, as if her job wasn’t an adequate source of drama, she’s having an affair with the president of the United States, Fitzgerald Grant III.

As for Fitz’s wife… Well, as the kids would say, Bitch is cray. And giving us Mellys a bad name! (Her name is spelled with an “ie” instead of a “y,” though, so maybe it doesn’t count?)

To see what I mean, peep the clip. Note: When this aired last week, it wasn’t clear whether Mellie (Bellamy Young) knew about Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz’s relationship.

Advanced Style

These photos have inspired me to think differently about how I wear a few wardrobe basics.

Check ‘em:

Genius way to sport a watch.

Luv the way this skinny belt is looped.

Ever stand in the mirror for several minutes cuffing your jeans just so? Me too. But maybe we should reconsider…

A collared shirt unbuttoned and worn off the shoulder for some subtle sexiness.

And unlike some of the styling you see in those fantastic-but-that-ain’t-gonna-fly-in-real-life editorials, you can try these at home.

F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of my favorite authors and The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite novels and, well, I watched this trailer and I didn’t have the urge to smack Baz Luhrman in the face, so…

Came across this just a few minutes ago, and it’s so timely considering yesterday would have been Biggie’s 40th birthday.

Robin Gibb’s death yesterday at age 62 is particularly sad to me. As one-third of the legendary Bee Gees, he helped define the sound of the disco era I luv so much.

I absolutely cannot pick a favorite Bee Gees song. Too hard! But if I had to pick a song that’s practically guaranteed to get anyone anywhere up shakin’ their groove thing, it’s this one. I mean, the title kinda says it all, right?

OK y’all, crank up the volume and break it down in memory of the very talented Mr. Robin Gibb.

Go!

Despite actually living through the disco era, neither of my parents are disco music fans. Well, not as big a fan as I am.

I can’t remember what sparked my love affair with disco probably the clothes but it began in high school (I even made sure to play “Dancing Queen” on my 17th birthday. “Young and sweet, only 17.”) and it hasn’t let up.

So, needless to say, I’m pretty upset over Donna Summer’s death yesterday. You can’t talk about disco without talking about her; the two are inextricably linked.

Rest in peace, Donna. So many of us loved to love you.

Country Strong

In honor of the London 2012 Summer Games, the June issue of Vogue features several hard-bodied Olympic hopefuls, and the lithe Karlie Kloss, as seen through Annie Leibovitz’s lens.

The results are pretty fabulous. Check ‘em:

Hope Solo, Ryan Lochte, and Serena Williams on the cover.

Luv the first shot of Ashton and Karlie. Using her as a stand-in for the hurdle was inspired.

The first shot of Dwyane and Karlie seems kind of silly since he’s attempting to shoot, but he’s obviously shooting away from the basket. I guess they wanted readers to see him from the front, but we get that view in the last shot.

Still…well done, Vogue.

Pretty in Pink

I’ve just seen these photos of Jenna Lyons at this year’s Met Gala and, as usual, she looks fantastic.

Two points for incorporating one of Schiaparelli’s signature colors: Shocking Pink.
